Why are my images not loading OR can't be read?

If you are experiencing difficulties loading your images when uploading by batch, this article will explain possible causes and how to fix them.

Possible reasons your images will not load:

  1. non-white background
  2. special characters
  3. spaces

  4. case sensitive

  5. file type extension

  6. must match file name with data CSV

  7. no image saved to file

  8. possible difference between .jpg and .jpeg

  9. images not in correct .jpg or .jpeg format even when shown .jpg or .jpeg
  10. edge of the background
  11. transparent background
  12. quantity of images selected or upload each time

1. Non-White Background

Atelier's machine learning depends on white background images, so we cannot accept images without white backgrounds. Small product shadows are acceptable.

2. Special Characters (EG: & or #)

On the internet and in computing special characters are often used to activate commands. For this reason it is industry standard not to permit special characters in file names being uploaded to websites.

3. Spaces

On the internet and in computing spaces are often problematic for computers to process. For this reason it is industry standard not to permit spaces in file names being uploaded to websites.

💡 We can help

If your image names contain spaces there is an easy way to remove the spaces. However, this function is available on Mac computers only (explained below).

If you do not have access to a Mac machine then you can zip your images into a compressed folder and send them to our support team who will be able to perform this task for you. We will process these requests only for large batches of images, in single requests not multiple requests.

4. Case Sensitive

The image name must be exactly the same as the value you have saved in your CSV file - here are some examples:

Value in file = MyImage.jpg

Image name = myimage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.JPG

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.jpg

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = success

5. File Type Extension

Images can be saved with different file types, with 99% being either jpeg or png file types. You need to ensure your file type saved in your data file is the same as your actual images:

Value in file = MyImage.png

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.png

Image name = MyImage.png

Result = success

6. Must Match File Name with Data CSV

Your image name must be identical to your data entered in your CSV file. Here are some examples to help you diagnose:

Value in file = my image.jpg

Image name = my_image.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.jpg

Image name = myimage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.JPG

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.jpeg

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.jpg

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = success

7. No Image Saved To File

You should never try to load a CSV or Excel file containing images.

The file should only contain the image name, and the images are loaded separately.

8. Possible Difference Between .JPG and .JPEG

Depending on the computer where the image was first saved, in rare cases you may see a difference between the file extension name:

  • Saved on Mac: MyImage.jpeg
  • Saved on recent versions of Windows: MyImage.jpeg
  • Saved on older versions of Windows: MyImage.jpg

All you need to do is ensure your file name exactly matches your image name and you will resolve this issue:

Value in file = MyImage.jpeg

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = error

Value in file = MyImage.jpg

Image name = MyImage.jpg

Result = success

9. Images Not In Correct .JPG or .JPEG Format Even When Shown .JPG or .JPEG

If your image shown as .jpg or .jpeg is not accepted by our system (can't be read) use this FREE tool to check your 'file type': please click here .

Once you have the correct 'file type', please re-name your file accordingly.

File type examples = .jpg or .xsl or .pdf

10. Edge of Background

If your image has a white background but you are still receiving the following error warning 'images must have a white background'.

You must enlarge the white border (edge or frame) space surrounding the image. We suggest to enlarge the border space to account for one-third of the proportion.

11.  Transparent Background

Image shows as white background but after uploading it shows as a black background.

If your image has a transparent background it may appear as white, but when loaded to our system it will appear with a black background. Please make sure the background is not transparent before uploading.

12. Quantity of Images Selected or Upload Each Time

Please make sure the quantity of the image files you select to upload is not over 100 at a time. If you load more than 100 images, the system will upload 100 files randomly (not the first 100).
